USMTS Drivers Swung by the Princeton Speedway for the First Time Ever for Night 1 of the 5th Annual Mod Wars

By: Tami Jo Kuehn

Princeton, MN (July 18) – The USMTS Modifieds made their first ever stop at the Princeton Speedway Friday night for Night 1 of the 5th Annual Mod Wars. 109 total drivers signed in, and even though Mother Nature ended the night early, the racing was top notch. Tommy Pogones and Curt Myers claimed WISSOTA wins for the night, while Jim Chisholm won in the Modifieds.

The Hy-Tech Automotive WISSOTA Street Stocks were first on the agenda with Lucas Boyce and AJ Kellar on row one. Boyce and Kellar remained door to door the opening laps until Kellar broke free with a few laps in the books. Boyce held second with Tommy Pogones on his rear. Pogones slid by for the point and chased after Kellar. A handful of laps remained when a caution was triggered, and when the race resumed, Kellar, Pogones, and Boyce were three-wide for first. Pogones emerged with the lead and held the point until the checkers flew. Tommy Pogones took his #04 to victory lane with AJ Kellar, Lucas Boyce, Thomas Worth and Trent Keller as the top finishers.

A great mix of USMTS and WISSOTA Modifieds took the track to battle it out in Night 1 of Mod Wars with Mother Nature knocking on the door. Clayton Wagamon and Jim Chisholm battled the opening laps of the 40-lap race until Chisholm nosed out the lead. Wagamon remained close and challenged the #24c in the curves, while Reece Solander closed the gap, and slid by Wagamon for second. Solander and Wagamon swapped for second as slower traffic came into play. Cars covered the entire bullring as a driver spun in the curve and a caution was triggered.

Solander and Chisholm brought the drivers back to green with 24 laps left on the board. Chisholm sped off with the lead while Gary Chrisitan challenged Solander for second. They remained door to door, others raced three-wide, while Chisholm sailed away with the lead. Solander found his groove and closed the gap with Chisholm as once again, lapped traffic came into sight. Chisholm prepared to put drivers down a lap but found Solander on his bumper. Few laps remained as Solander dove low to shoot by Chisholm. Chisholm however sped past the #5 and reclaimed the lead. Solander gave it a final shot, but Jim Chisholm proved to be faster and took the first win of the Mod Wars weekend. Reece Solander finished in second with Gary Christian, Dave Cain and Clayton Wagamon rounded out the top five.

Dexton Koch and Alex Myers brought the Zoomies Race Engines WISSOTA Super Stocks to green with a great field of drivers making the call. Koch claimed the lead at the end of lap one, but a couple cautions reset the field. Austin Niemeyer took second while Curt Myers and Alex Myers made the battle three-wide. Curt Myers grabbed the point and chased after Koch while others continued to battle. Curt Myers caught Koch and made the pass for first with slower traffic mixed in. Shane Sabraski took over second and looked ahead at Curt Myers, with only two laps to go. Sabraski shaved off some of the time gap with Myers, however, Curt Myers grabbed the checkers. Points two through five went to Shane Sabraski, Dylan Nelson, Dexton Koch and Austin Niemeyer.

With three features left, Mother Nature cut the night short by dropping rain on the speedway. Midwest Modifieds, Mod Fours and Hornets will have make up features at a later date, with those details being announced soon. Next Friday, the Princeton Speedway will be off, but we invite everyone to join us at Wagamon’s Ogilvie Raceway for the XR Big Deal $125,000 to win for the Modifieds, and $25,000 to win for the B Modifieds.
