Shryock & Schwebach Top Stock Car Nationals

Spring Valley, MN (September 14)
By: Todd Narveson

The 6th Annual Altenburg Construction Stock Car Nationals took place at Deer Creek Speedway on Saturday. The show was also supported by The Place Sports Bars & Grill, Houdek Farms, Gift of Life Transplant House and Donate Life.

Forty-Seven Meadow Greens Golf Course USRA Hobby Stocks ran five heats in which the top 16 in passing points locked into the feature. Two B-main were run with the top seven advancing to the main event.

Nick Brady, Justin Lichty and Dustin Gulbrandson led the three-wide start for the $1500 to win, 25-lap race. Luke Schluetter took off from the middle of row two and took the early lead. A yellow came out on lap three, followed by two more cautions on the restart.

When the race resumed, Gulbrandson shot by Brady and Lichty to second. The driver on the move was Nick Schwebach had moved from 19th to sixth. Gulbrandson applied pressure on Schluetter for the lead on lap eight. The battle for third was three wide behind the lead duo.

Casey Colsch was up to third as Schwebach worked to fourth and then got to third before the yekllow flag waved on lap 10. Gulbrandson again challenged Schluetter for the lead with Schwebach close behind. Another caution came out on lap 13 to slow the race once again.

The green flag came back out and the top three were close. They battled for the lead until lap 17 when Gulbrandson slowed in turn two, bringing out the yellow flag. Schluetter still led, but Schwebach challenged. Landon Krohn, 11th starter Devin Holthaus and 16th starter Travis Krause were now into the top five.

Schwebach took the lead on lap 19 and pulled away in the final six laps to take the win. Schluetter would finish second with Holthaus third. Krause’s run ended in fourth and Krohn rounded out the top five.

Sixty-four Rochester Chevrolet-Cadillac USRA Stock Cars ran six heats in which the top 15 in passing points were set for the main event. Three B-Mains were contested that took the top five to the feature. Positions 6-13 in the B’s would transfer to the non-qualifier.

The non-qualifier was a 20-lap affair that paid $1000 to the winner. Right off the bat Caydn Wessels, Dillon Anderson and Jake James went three-wide for the lead. James would jump out front while Devin Snellenberger moved to second.

James would lead the rest of the way for his first ever win. James then opted to starts 31st in the A-Main. Snellenberger was second with Anderson third. Darrin Schmidt had and incredible run to fourth after he started 22nd, while Lucas Schott finished in fifth.

Cayden Carter, Blake Adams and Jacob Bleess led the 31-car field to the green flag for the 40-lap, $10,000 to win main event. Carter took the early advantage with Bleess all over him. Carter led lap two by .002, but Bleess threw a slider in turn two to take the lead.

Jonny Carter moved to third and the top three ran close on lap seven. Cayden Carter made a move for the lead on lap 10 and took the spot away from Bleess. Bleess fired right back on lap 11 with a slider for the lead in turn three. Cayden Carter rallied back by Bleess in turn four and led the lap. A yellow would slow the race on lap 11.

On the restart Cayden Carter held the lead, while Jonny Carter got to second. Behind them. Bleess, Kyle Falck and Kelly Shryock were three wide for third. Shryock moved to third on lap 14 and then closed in on Jonny Carter.

While the race for second was going on, Cayden Carter had opened up a large lead. Shryock worked to second and at that point Cayden Carter held a two-second lead. Cayden Carter opened the lead margin to 2.56-seconds before a caution came out on lap 27.

When the race resumed, Cayden Carter still held the lead using the mid to upper groove. Shryock ran the low groove and stayed close to the leader. Shryock made a bid for the lead on lap 33 and took the lead on lap 35. A caution came out on lap 38 and then again on the restart.

Shryock raced out of turn four just as the white flag was set to fly. But yet another caution flag flew to set up a green, white, checkered dash for ten-grand. Shryock held on for this win, his 19th in the stock car this season.

Cayden Carter would finish in second. Rod Snellenberger ran from 18th to third, while Jonny Carter was fourth. Pat Graham rallied from 15th to finish our the top five. Altenburg Construction offered a $1000 Hard Charger award in the feature. Travis Shipman charged from 30-th ninth to claim the hard-charger bonus.
