Sanders wins at Deer Creek, regains USMTS points lead

Rodney Sanders had a busy Memorial Day weekend of racing action, which included three United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) starts as well as a Tri-State Late Model Series event. During the course of his four-day run he claimed a $10,000 USMTS win to go along with a total of three Modified podium finishes and a sixth-place performance in his Late Model. (Tyler Rinken photo)

Sanders lone weekend win came on Saturday evening at Deer Creek Speedway aboard his Wichita Tank Racing No. 20 Kenny’s Tile/ ARMI Contractors/ MB Customs/ Hatfield Racing Engine Modified.

On the heels of his sixth overall victory of the season and his consistency, Sanders also catapulted to the top of the latest USMTS standings.

“It was a busy weekend for the team, but overall we very happy with our performances. The talent-level on this USMTS tour is pretty incredible and to contend for wins all three nights says a lot about how strong our team is. Everyone knows that Deer Creek Speedway is one of my favorite tracks, and we always have confidence when we go there. Picking up the $10,000 win there on Saturday was a nice added boost for our bank account and our team’s confidence as we prepare for a busy upcoming schedule,” Sanders said. “On Monday night we took the Late Model to Husets. Again, there was a really stacked field of racers there, and no more than we’ve raced the Late Model this year I was pleased with a sixth-place finish.”

Behind the wheel of his Arkansas Myriad (ARMI) No. 20 Modified, Rodney Sanders lifted the lid on his Memorial Day weekend on Friday evening at Iowa’s Rapid Speedway in the 13th annual Rapid Rumble. In a field of 36 United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) entries, Rodney improved two spots in his heat race to register a runner-up finish behind Jake O’Neil. Unable to close the distance on race-long pacesetter O’Neil after a caution with seven-to-go in the feature, Sanders settled with a second-place finish. Lucas Schott, Dan Ebert, and Johnny Scott rounded out the Top-5 finishers in the 40-lap affair.

On Saturday afternoon at Deer Creek Speedway (Spring Valley, Minn.) for the USMTS Spring Challenge, Sanders passed three cars in his heat race to pick up the win. Leading flag-to-flag in the 40-lap feature, Rodney rolled to his sixth win of the season, which came over Zack VanderBeek, Tyler Wolff, Tanner Mullens, and Jake O’Neil. He earned $10,000 for his winning performance.

For the USMTS weekend finale on Sunday at Upper Iowa Speedway (Decorah, Iowa), Rodney posted a third-place finish in his heat, which positioned him 10th on the starting grid for the $10,000-to-win finale. Advancing into a podium spot, Sanders weaved forward seven positions in the 40-lapper to finish third. He trailed Tyler Wolff and Lucas Lee to the checkers with Dereck Ramirez and Jake O’Neil rounding out the Top-5.

On Monday, Sanders returned to the driver’s seat of his Late Model and headed to Huset’s Speedway (Brandon, S.D.) for the Ben Nothdurft Memorial. In a field of 41 RepairableVehicles.com Tri-State Late Model Series entries, Rodney followed up the third-fastest time in his group with an eight-lap heat race victory. Starting the $6,000-to-win A-Main in fourth, Sanders slipped two spots in the 40-lapper to finish sixth. (Jeff Bylsma photo)

With his weekend performances, Rodney has regained the lead in the latest USMTS point standings.
