O’Neil dominates USMTS Duel at Deer Creek
By USMTS (Spring Valley, MN) -- Jake O’Neil zeroed in on the lead at the drop of the green flag and proceeded to run away and hide from the field in Saturday’s caution-free 40-lap main event to cap the 15th Annual J&S JCB USMTS Labor Day Duel at the Deer Creek Speedway.
His career-first win at ‘The Creek’ was the eighth of his USMTS career and worth $3,000 to the 28-year-old from Tucson, Arizona. It ties him on the all-time wins list with Ryan Ruter, Tommy Weder Jr., Ricky Thornton Jr. and Brandon Davis, who finished third behind O’Neil in the main event and ended his three-race win streak at the track.
O'Neil shared the front row with polesitter Matt Leer and took off from the pack at the start. With no cautions to aid his pursuers, O’Neil built a lead of more than four seconds at one point in the race, eventually beating Tanner Mullens to the finish line by 1.228 seconds.
Behind Mullens, Davis passed seven cars to squeeze onto the podium while Leer held on for a career-best fourth-place finish before being disqualified in post-race technical inspections for an unapproved rev-limiting chip.
That moved Leer’s fellow Dairy State driver David Baxter into the fourth finishing position while defending Featherlite Fall Jamboree champ Jacob Bleess rounded out the top five.
Lucas Schott followed his fellow Chatfield resident in sixth, Dereck Ramirez finished seventh and gained just two markers on points leader Rodney Sanders in eighth. Zack VanderBeek nabbed the ninth spot and Jason Hughes rounded out the top 10.
More than any other racetrack in America, Saturday’s show was the 113th time the Summit USMTS National Championship fueled by Casey’s circled the Deer Creek Speedway, but due to an unpredictable 2020 season it was also the longest hiatus from the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval in Spring Valley, Minn., since the first race in 2002.
The series last competed here September 21 of last year during the final night of the 21st annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree. This year’s Jamboree kicks off in just 20 days on Friday, September 25.
O’Neil is the 44th different driver to take home a USMTS trophy from the Deer Creek Speedway.
War in West Union: The high-speed road show stops at the Fayette County Speedway in West Union, Iowa, on Sunday for the 8th Annual USMTS War in West Union presented by Integra.
This will be the eighth visit by the USMTS since 2007 when Jason Krohn won the inaugural event here. Jake Neal picked up his first and only USMTS victory the following season, and Ryan Gustin won here in 2009.
Zack VanderBeek got the win in 2016 and Gustin became the first two-time winner of this event in 2017. Lucas Schott is the defending champion of the event.
For a second straight night, the Summit USMTS National Championship fueled by Casey’s will be joined by the Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge built by Medieval Chassis featuring American Racer USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods. Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks will complete the four-class card.
The Fayette County Speedway is one of the oldest, continuously running racetracks in Iowa. In the 1930s, the Fayette County Fairgrounds was a horse track that circled just about the entire fairgrounds. The present pit area is the old back stretch for the former half-mile track.
In 1991, promoter Jerry Blue built the 3/8-mile track that is raced on today. The track is now operated by the Fayette County Ag Society Race Committee. Their goal is to provide the best racing show possible with 50/50 ticket proceeds going back into facility improvements including recently renovated women’s restrooms, updated concession stand and the new grandstand walkway.
The Fayette County Speedway is a semi-banked 3/8-mile clay oval located 0.9 mile south of US 18 on SR 150, then 0.1 mile east on SR 56 (Vine St.).

Currently, the 2020 schedule for the Summit USMTS National Championship fueled by Casey’s is highlighted by 40 nights of racing at 25 unique dirt ovals for the 22nd season of competition for the world’s Best of the Best in dirt modified racing.

Hovden, Demmer cruise to Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge wins at Deer Creek
By USRA (Spring Valley, MN) -- For the first time since July 11, the Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge built by Medieval Chassis returned to the dirt Saturday at the Deer Creek Speedway with Mitch Hovden and Scott Demmer dominating their respective main events.
In the American Racer USRA Stock Car 20-lapper, Hovden roared from the sixth starting spot to grab the lead from polesitter Pat Graham and never looked back in capturing his 13 win of the 2020 season.
The seven-time Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national champion from Decorah, Iowa, collected $600 for his efforts as he looked to increase the two-point margin he currently holds in the national standings.
It was his third straight Labor Day Weekend win at ‘The Creek’ as his quest for a third straight American Racer USRA Stock Car national title continues. Hovden also won back-to-back crowns in 2015 and 2016 as well as 2011 and 2012. His first happened in 2007 in the Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stock division.
Hovden, 33, collected $600 for the victory. Fellow Decorah driver Kevin Donlan closed the gap by race’s end but wound up settling for the runner-up paycheck ahead of 13th-starting and two-time Iron Man champ Derek Green of Granada, Minn.
Lynn Panos of Calmar claimed the fourth spot and fifth went to three-time USRA B-Mod racer Matt Jones of Waukon, Iowa. Dillon Anderson, Dan Jones, Troy Hansmeier, Darrin Korthals and Jesse Brown rounded out the top 10.
In Saturday night’s USRA B-Mod nightcap, Scott Demmer built a massive lead that was erased with six laps remaining in the 20-lap feature. Undaunted, the 38-year-old from Ellendale, Minn., held off national points leader and Deer Creek Speedway track champion Jim Chisholm to bag the $500 top prize.
While Demmer notched his second USRA B-Mod win for the season, Chisholm’s charge from the 16th starting spot only made it to the runner-up position and short of netting a 13th triumph this season for the Osage, Iowa, youngster.
Scott Demmer won the USRA B-Mod main event.
Taylor Skauge of Caledonia got around two-time Iron Man titlist Dan Hovden of Decorah on the final lap to snag a third-place finish and Austin’s Noah Grinstead completed the top five.
A.J. Hoff, Josh Roney, Danny Sacquitne, 20th-starting Dustin Kruse and Hunter Kennedy finished sixth through 10th, respectively.
War in West Union: The Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge built by Medieval Chassis stops at the Fayette County Speedway in West Union, Iowa, on Sunday for the 8th Annual War in West Union presented by Integra.
As it did on Saturday, the series will share the spotlight with the fire-breathing Modifieds of the Summit USMTS National Championship fueled by Casey’s. Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks will complete the four-class card.
